We’ll Be Together
Diana Ross & The Supremes’ hit song “Someday We’ll Be Together” speaks of the hope we can have to build relationships across space and time.
The lyrics describe this hope this way:
“You’re far away from me…and just as sure…as there are stars above, I wanna say, someday, we’ll be together.”
Every year at Motown Mission, we reach the moment when we know folks are preparing to travel to Detroit. They pack up vans and head out onto the highway. It is a moment of expectation and celebration for another season of service alongside Detroiters. And here’s what it teaches us:
Just as the earliest followers of Jesus in Acts 2 expressed their joy in community by sharing meals and spending time in each other’s homes, we, too, strive to foster that sense of togetherness and hospitality for the teams visiting Detroit.
We also know that the project hosts, neighborhood partners, and church supporters are experts at offering hospitality to volunteer teams. Shout out to all of them!
By experience togetherness and welcome through Christian service in Detroit, volunteers can grow in their capactiy to build that same kind of welcome in their communities when they get home.
Questions for Discussion:
When have you felt welcome in one of your friend’s houses?
What is your best strategy for making people feel welcome? Do you bake treats, play games, or check in with texts or calls?
Think about a person in your life that needs to know they are held in your heart. What are three ways you could let them know that this week?
