Nowhere to Run

Martha & the Vandellas sing about an inescapable love in their song, “Nowhere to Run.” And, while she might be singing about a romantic relationship, we find some theological insight in her lyrics.

Martha sings:

“It’s not love, I’m running from. It’s the heartbreak I know will come.”

At Motown Mission we know that sometimes sharing God’s love with others can feel heartbreaking. We’re crushed when we hear that a person we served alongside has been hit with another calamity. Or, we’re just overwhelmed by the realization of how unjust the world can be. In those moments we try to remember:

  1. Jesus was willing to come and be with us on this earth in the middle of all our heartbreak, and that’s exactly what God offers today - love in the midst of struggle.

  2. If we feel like running away because the heartbreak can be too much - just remember how much harder life could be without faithful friends around us.

  3. An antidote to heartbreak is described in Psalm 133 - “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!”

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What heartbreak do you have in your life?

  2. When has someone showed up for you just when you thought there was no more hope?

  3. Describe a time when you met heartbreak head on with love, kindness, compassion, service?

  4. Paslm 147 we are reminded that “God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” What kind of “binding up of wounds” do you expect to participate in on your Motown Mission trip?
