Leaving

Gladys Knight & The Pips sang this hit song about uprooting your life to maintain important relationships. It’s about claiming people before places, friendships before your own agenda.

Gladys sings:

“I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine.”

At Motown Mission we believe that Jesus calls us to be uprooted from time to time.

  1. We believe that leaving your home, your familiar schedule, your comfort zone - can open up God-inspired moments for you.

  2. We believe that the people of Detroit make great hosts for people on such quests to find Jesus.

  3. We believe that on a service trip to Motown you might just meet new friends whom you really enjoy being “right there by their side.”

We know that one week in a Summer isn’t a permanent change in location. But, we pray that it will provide a permanent change in our shared understanding of affection and connection with each other.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What’s the best part about your life, your family, your friends right now?

  2. Who would you miss the most if you moved across the country, and why?

  3. Describe a time when you met a new person on a trip that almost made you forget about being away from home?

  4. Luke 13 tells the story of folx finding each other on their journey with God. How will you pray to find new friends like these on your trip to Detroit?

“Then people will come from east and west,

from north and south,

and take their places at the banquet

in the kingdom of God.

Indeed, some are last who will be first,

and some are first who will be last.”
