Lifting Each Other

Jackie Wilson made this Berry Gordy tune a hit, and while he never technically joined the roster of Motown Records, we still keep playing this song for it’s vibe and for the message it shares.

Jackie sings:

“Now once, I was down-hearted
Disappointment, was my closest friend
But then you, came and it soon departed.”

At Motown Mission we have seen how meeting new friends can lift our spirits, and give us a sense of hope. And this isn’t just a one-way experience:

  1. We believe that visitors to Detroit meet folks who live like the grace and promise of God are real.

  2. We believe that working together on projects around the city give us all a chance to lift each other up in small but significant ways.

  3. We believe that new friends and faith-inspired action together can actually push back against despair and harm.

Plus, we love the line that says, “I’ll be at your side, forever more.” It reminds us of Jesus’ own promise to us and the kind of commitment to each other that will carry us through.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. We’ve linked to two versions of this song, which one speaks to you the most today and why?

  2. Who is one person in your life who lifts your spirits?

  3. What are some “small but significant” actions you our your church have done that lift others up?

  4. Hebrews 10 encourages us to “provoke one another to love and good deeds.” How will you provoke your mission team members during your service in Detroit? Think about one way to encourage your friends:
