Fed
On any given day we may not remember what we’ve eaten. Maybe it is because our family has so little food that its hard to notice that dinner happened at all. For others of us, we may have made so many DoorDash orders that we forgot which one was for lunch today. What we do know is that eating and being nourished are woven into God’s story in the Bible, and that’s important to pay attention to.
Scripture: Luke 14:7-11
In this story told by Jesus we learn that sometimes being fed isn’t just about the food. For a person who regularly broke norms and ate with “the wrong people” it’s important to see that. For Jesus meals are mostly about hospitality and humility. They are about welcoming the stranger, being welcomed by others, and sharing in the equity of dining together.
Questions:
When have you experienced a special meal that seemed way more important than just the food that got eaten?
Who do you know who needs a special invitation for a meal?
How are your faith communities living out this call to host meals and invite people to build community around them?
What’s one dish that you can bring to a potluck that really communicates hospitality to others?
Take Action:
The Foody Challenge - This week, find one moment when you can offer humility and hospitality to a person outside your group by sharing food. Maybe this is a snack given to someone on the side of the road. Maybe this is paying for ice cream for a stranger. Maybe it’s making a special dish to give to a project partner. You can do this!
