Lament & Love
The Temptations understand something about sharing love with others: sometimes we have to be honest about how much pain disconnection can cause.
At Motown Mission we believe some things to be really, really true.
God calls us into radical relationships with others. Sometimes this means being friends with people the world says we should ignore.
When we walk alongside others, we can follow their lead in making the world a better place, AND we can grieve with them about the brokenness in the world.
Jesus teaches that whenever we pursue deep relationships with others in order to share love and justice - then we are experiencing the kin-dom of heaven.
So when the Temptations sing “I don’t mind weepin’ if it’ll keep you by my side,” we remember that loving others might have moments of sadness or pain - but in that shared experience we stay knit together in the way that the Holy Spirit calls us to do!

Philippians 2 says: “If, then, there is any comfort in Christ, any consolation from love, any partnership in the Spirit, any tender affection and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.” Take a few minutes to share your hopes and prayers that we can find that “same mind, same love” as we prepare to serve in Detroit together!
